This happened a few years ago when I was fifteen. It was a stormy night, and the wind was really blowing hard. We have a problem where I live about the power going out when conditions are like that. Sure enough, I was deep into a nice adventure novel, and the room plunged into darkness.

Damn! I cursed to myself and felt around for my flashlight. I finally located it under my bed and turned it on. As I lay there trying to decide whether to try to read by flashlight or just go to sleep, I heard some footsteps in the hallway. My door slowly opened and candlelight flickered into my room. It all started when I was posted in Secunderabad. I was in mid 30’s and working as a Regional Manager of a courier Company. I ordered a cup of tea and mummy started saying that Geetha was a widow working in the airlines and had a small daughter. She had got stuck in recovering the dues of her husband and was feeling bad that she had nobody to help her. Mum politely asked why don’t you be a sweet child and help her to recover. Many years ago when we were18, my friends, Lynn, Becky and I took part-time jobs in a local supermarket. I was assigned to work on the fruit and veg. Department with a woman called Eve. Eve was in her forties and was completely different from my mother. She wore short skirts, too much make-up and she swore like a trooper! I thought that she was wonderful.

It was just an ordinary day and nothing could be said except that me and my sister-in-law Molly had to go to our guesthouse as the pest control people would come for cleaning. Summers were great growing up. We were lucky enough to have a full sized pool in the back yard. My sister Cassie and me always had someone over for a swim. I am 45 yrs old now and have a lot of past experiences that I was and still enjoying today. My name is Joyanta and I live in Calcutta. As traditionally in the Bengali housework is done by the maidservants. The life of these maids are very pathetic as they get married very early produce one or two children and their husbands leave them for a fresh bird. They become helpless and start working in people’s houses or start whoring around. I stay in a small flat with 3 rooms and bathroom and kitchen.
