My name is May and I am a chinese girl born in Hong Kong. My mother died while giving birth to me. My father died as well four months later in a vehicle accident. My grandmother became my guardian until I was four when she no longer had the ability to care for me due to her age. As a result I was sent to my aunt Mary, my mother’s sister, in Liverpool, England. I was told that my mother derived my name from my aunt’s by adding an “R” to it. She loved me as though I was her own daughter. She had no children nor was she married and so she devoted all her energy in raising me up. She was a teacher at a local elementary school and by placing me in that very same school she was able to keep an eye on me even during the day. As I grew up she encouraged me to join organizations such as Girl Guides and to participate in extra-curricular activities such as the school swimming and cross-country running team. Since I grew up in England I did not have the chinese accent most people would expect from a chinese girl from Hong Kong and I have always fit in quite well with other students at school.
